5 Ways to Manage Dry Eyes This Winter

15111544505 Ways to Manage Dry Eyes This Winter

Your eyes are sensitive to temperature changes. With winter nearing, this season’s colder air may put you at risk of developing dry eyes. Mission Vision, your reliable eye care center, shares five tips on maintaining your eye health and comfort during this time of the year.

  1. Drink Lots of Fluids

Staying hydrated is one of the best ways to prevent dry eyes. Drinking at least eight glasses of water a day helps maintain the moisture in your eyes.

  2. Prepare Seafood Dishes

Seafood, particularly coldwater fish, is rich in omega-3 essential fatty acids. These nutrients provide lubrication in your eyes, preventing dry eye development. Some good examples are tuna, mackerel and salmon.

  3. Apply Artificial Tears

Like natural tears, artificial ones contain oil, mucus and water to keep your eyes moisturized. Their combination prevents your tear film from easily evaporating, preventing any visual discomfort. Applying a few drops to your eyes also makes putting in and removing contact lenses easier. If doing so is not enough to address your dry eyes, we may include anti-inflammatory medications in your eye care plan to reduce your eyes’ irritation as well.

  4. Protect Your Eyes All the Time

Wearing safety eyeglasses is an effective way to prevent winter’s dry air from coming into contact with your eyes. Choose a pair with oversized lenses and wrap-around glasses. Such glasses provide better coverage, blocking wind from entering through the sides.

  5. Have Your Eyes Checked

No matter the season, a visit to your optometrist is always a good idea. Undergoing a comprehensive eye exam helps identify any irregularities with your tear quality or production rate. This way, we can create a more specific treatment plan for you.
